Higgins Lake

Michigan state is home to a large, commonly known fishing and recreation spot called Higgins Lake. It’s known for it’s deep, clear waters that span out 9,900 acres for a total of 21 miles of shoreline. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 135 feet and receives half its water from a combination of submerged springs, incoming springs, and waters directly from rainfall and runoff. Drainage runs into Marl Lake by way of the Cut River which connects to Houghton Lake and eventually joins Lake Michigan. The neighboring Lake Huron watershed is located just one mile north of the lake and takes on Higgins Lake waterflow. The size of Higgins Lake is so large that it is considered a morphometrically oligotrophic lake, meaning that it functions and appears to be nutrient-poor though in actuality, it receives a fair amount of nutrients. The other lakes in the surrounding communities that meet the shoreline include Hillcrest, Lyon, Manor, Detroit Park, Cook Corner, Sharps Corner, Almeda Beach, Oak Grove, Ritz Corner, Pine Bluffs, Daytona-on-the-Lake, and Cottage Grove, all of which are located on the boundary between the western region of Lyon Township and Gerrish Township in the east. The two most well-known state parks reside on opposite ends of the lake: South Higgins Lake State Park and North Higgins Lake State Park.
