Of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is the fourth-largest by surface area, reaching 210 feet at its deepest point. Bordered by Ontario in Canada, this region is also met with the US states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan, all of which divide the lake’s surface area by water boundaries. The primary inlet for Erie is the Detroit River, with Lake Huron situated just below it and the Niagara River being the primary source of natural outflow, providing both Canada and United States with hydroelectric power. One of the area’s biggest tourist attractions belongs to that of the diver community—with over 270 confirmed shipwreck locations and thousands more undiscovered, well preserved locales believed to total more than 8,000. Aside from diving, other activities on Lake Erie include sport and ice fishing, kayaking the more than 100 miles of shoreline amongst the steep cliffs and exotic wildlife, not to mention the numerous parks, biking trails, and lighthouses to explore.
