Lake Michigan is one of five Great Lakes—the second largest by volume and the only one that is located solely within the US. The other four lakes: Huron, Superior, Ontario, and Erie are shared with Canada. Lake Michigan is bounded by four US states: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Its watery shores include the ports of Chicago, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Gary, Indiana, and Benton Harbor, Michigan. This region is typically referred to as the United States' Third Coast due to the many beaches of "singing sands" whose soft, high quartz content, off-white sands squeak when walked upon. Aside from its well-known beaches, tourism flocks to this area for the historical architecture, the towering lighthouses, the marshlands and sand dunes, as well as the artsy shops and state parks.
