Ocean City

Officially known as the Town of Ocean City, this state of Maryland seaside city is a well-known Atlantic resort and tourist destination that hosts over eight million visitors per year during the summer months. This popular spot in 36.37 square miles in total area, 31.96 square miles of which is water and is located on the barrier spit referred to as Fenwick Island, which includes Ocean City as well as South Bethany, Delaware and Fenwick Island, Delaware. The southern point of the inlet was formed by a hurricane in 1933, the overflowing waters from the rainfall and tides swelled up the rivers and bays and surrounding areas which caused a 50-foot crevasse to cut through from the bay to the ocean. The most sought attraction in the area is the city’s boardwalk, lined with 2.25 miles of arcades, food, shops, and other amusements. The city has also encountered several shark sightings close to the shores of both Ocean City and Delaware.
