The Finger Lakes of New York state is made up of several glacial bodies of water. The largest and deepest is Seneca Lake. Coined the lake trout capital of the world, this well-known Finger Lake is 38 miles in length, maximum depths of 618 feet, and a surface area of 66.9 square miles. The lake itself is called Seneca after the nation of Native Americans who were the original namesake. It extends through most of the state with Geneva, New York at the north end and the village of Watkins Glen, New York at the southern end. Fed by underground springs, this lake is replenished with circular moving waters at a rate of 328,000 gallons per minute. Because of the macroclimate in this area, it is the ideal temperature for growing grapes, which has facilitated the success of over 50 wineries in the region.
