How to Install a Wood Map

How to Install a Wood Map

25th Jan 2021

Installing a laser-engraved wood map calls for a few special considerations. A detailed, well-designed visual representation of a location of your choice is sure to attract attention from occupants and visitors. Display a 3D map in a location that invites viewers to get a closer look and shows the design to advantage. Small maps mounted in trays and larger framed designs can be displayed flat on surfaces or mounted on walls. These five steps should ensure the proper installation of a 3D map made of wood.

1. Plan Map Placement

Taking the time to plan where to put a map is the first step toward successful installation. If you have not yet purchased a map, you may want to compare various sizes of maps based on the amount of available space in the intended location. Otherwise, look for places that will make it possible for a map to safely be seen. If possible, try to allow room for foot traffic or make it easier for observers seated close-by to take a closer look.

2. Check the Frame of a Wood Map

The wood maps come framed, ready to hang. Small maps may be inset inside serving trays. The size of a map and frame design may determine the best approach to installation. The orientation and size of each map is determined based on the area depicted in the design. You may be able to get maps of the same region with a different focus.

3. Mount a Wood Map

Mounting maps is similar to the process for other art. It is important to account for the fact that each map is about 2 inches deep and covered with clear plexiglass. Most interior designers recommend mounting art around eye level. Always allow for sufficient clearance when mounting a map above a couch or other furniture.

4. Display a Tray Map

The smallest size of map measures 13” x 20” x 2” and is mounted inside of a serving tray with handles. Clear plexiglass protects the map inside of each tray, which can be presented flat on a surface or mounted on a wall. A tray map does not take up as much visual space but can still be used as an accent piece in a wall gallery or shelf display.

5. Pick the Best Presentation

The size of a map and the level of detail may determine the right location. Larger maps can occupy central spaces in room design, such as the space over a hearth. Smaller designs are suitable for wall mounting, incorporating into a shelving design or displaying in many other locations throughout a home or office.

These five steps make it easier to install a  wood map in any location. The most important measure you can take is to ensure that a map is displayed on a stable surface where it is not likely to be knocked off or securely mounted to a wall. Proper installation can prevent damage and allow for the desired level of visibility.
